David Wojnarowicz (1955-1992) was a painter, photographer, filmmaker, performance artist, AIDS activist and the author of Close to the Knives, The Waterfront Journals, and Memories that Smell like Gasoline. His diaries have been published by Grove Press with the title In the Shadow of the American Dream.
