Joan Halifax Roshi, Ph.D., is a Buddhist teacher and anthropologist. Her books include The Human Encounter with Death (with Stanislav Grof), Shamanic Voices, Shaman, Simplicity in the Complex, and the forthcoming Being with Dying. She is the founder and abbot of the Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She travels and lectures extensively in the United States and Europe.
