Germaine Greer, the author of The Madwoman’s Underclothes, was born in Melbourne, Australia, and educated at the universities of Melbourne, Sydney and Cambridge. Her doctoral thesis was on Shakespeare’s early comedies. From 1967 to 1972 she lectured at Warwick University, while working in the underground press and co-presenting a television series. The publication of The Female Eunuch in 1969, and the notoriety that followed, eventually led to her resignation from the university to write and lecture. She is also the author of The Obstacle Race and Sex and Destiny and The Whole Woman. She has lived in the United Kingdom since 1964.
