Born in England and educated at Cambridge, Yale, and Harvard, Alistair Cooke (1908–2004) became a U.S. citizen in 1941. Best known for his weekly BBC broadcast Letter from America, he was also The Guardian‘s chief American correspondent for twenty-five years, the host of Masterpiece Theatre and the BBC series America, and the best-selling author of more than a dozen books.
