Stephen Batchelor, the author of Alone with Others, was born in Scotland and was educated in Buddhist monasteries in India, Switzerland, and Korea. He was a monk for ten years in both the Tibetan and Zen traditions. For the last decade, he has lived with his wife, Martine, in a nondenominational Buddhist community in Devon, England, where he writes, lectures, and leads retreats. He is currently director of studies at Sharpton College for Buddhist Studies and Contemporary Enquiry, and has translated several books. He is also the author of The Awakening of the West: The Encounter of Buddhism and Western Culture and Buddhism Without Beliefs: A Contemporary Guide to Awakening.
